UT Austin – Data Center Renovation
This 26,000 SF Tier III data center was delivered through a design-build partnership between DPR Construction and Page Southerland Page, transforming a former central receiving building on the University of Texas at Austin campus into a mission-critical facility with 1.44MW of power.
The facility includes 9,000 SF of raised floor white space and an additional 17,000 SF for support, office, and MEP infrastructure. Key design innovations include the use of UPS flywheels in place of traditional static batteries—saving space, reducing explosion hazards, and eliminating the need for special ventilation. In an outage, the system provides 14 seconds of full-load backup—ample time to bring generators online.
Christian Dowell, now with CPM Texas, played a leading role in this renovation while at DPR Construction. The project reflects the team's experience with high-performance infrastructure, redundancy planning, and campus-based mission-critical systems.
